Principles of Ethics, Scientific Integrity, and Responsible Leadership:
A One-Day Training Seminar for Economists
Dear Colleagues,

The Association for Integrity and Responsible Leadership in Economics is offering another one of its training seminars in Chicago on Sunday, January 8, 2017. The seminar is independent of the annual meetings of the Allied Social Science Association (ASSA), but it will be easy for people to attend it who are already attending the ASSA conference (especially since the ASSA conference ends early on that day). The seminar takes place about four blocks away from the main conference hotel, in the magnificent Chicago Cultural Center. Space will also be made available for people to store their bags if they are traveling immediately after the seminar.

The same seminar was held in February 2016, in Washington D.C., the day before the annual meetings of the Eastern Economic Association. It was endorsed by the Eastern Economic Association and by the National Economists Club, and it received highly favorable reviews. Several organizations have sent their employees to the seminar so that those employees may meet their annual training requirements in leadership and ethics, and seminar attendees accordingly receive a certification of expertise. Not only will the seminar provide a wide range of insightful presentations, but will engage the audience in provocative, interactive discussions about some of the most challenging issues that face the economics profession.

Distinguished speakers at the seminar will include:
  • Deirdre McCloskey and George DeMartino, authors of the recent Oxford Handbook of Professional Economic Ethics;
  • Government Agency Leaders: Erica Groshen (Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics), Keith Hall (Director of the Congressional Budget Office), and Brian Moyer (Director of the Bureau of Economic Analysis);
  • David Colander, author of The Making of an Economist, and other noteworthy books on the economics profession, and author of many widely used textbooks in economics;
  • Stephen Ziliak, known for his highly beneficial work on addressing the proper use and interpretation of statistics in economics;
  • Richard G. Anderson, former Vice President of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis;
  • W. Charles Sawyer, author of Applied International  Economics; and
  • Benjamin Simon, Economics Staff Director at the Department of the Interior.
The cost for this all-day event is only $95 (for regular registration), and $50 for students. Organizations may also easily register groups of people in a single online form.
